Preparation

Prepare the Natural Nail

Push back the cuticles, gently remove surface shine, shape the nail, and cleanse away all dust and oil before applying any gel.

Proper prep is one of the most important factors in preventing lifting and improving gel retention.

Base

Apply the Base Coat

Apply a thin, even layer of base coat over the prepared nail. Keep the gel away from the skin and cure according to the product instructions.

Pro Note

Keep the base coat thin and even. A smooth foundation helps the cat-eye gel apply more evenly.

Color

Apply the Cat-Eye Gel

Apply an even layer of cat-eye gel over the nail. Keep the layer smooth and do not cure yet—the magnetic particles need to remain movable for the next step.

Magnet

Create the Velvet Effect

Hold the magnet close to the uncured cat-eye gel without touching the surface. Slowly move the magnet around the sides of the nail to draw the reflective particles inward. Continue adjusting the magnet until the glow looks soft, even, and dimensional.

Pro Note

Move the magnet slowly and watch the reflection as you work. Small changes in position can noticeably change the final effect.

Cure

Cure the Effect

Once you are happy with the velvet effect, cure the nail immediately according to the cat-eye gel and lamp instructions.

Pro Note

Perfect the magnetic effect before curing. Once the gel is cured, the particles can no longer be repositioned.

Finish

Apply Top Coat & Finish

Apply an even layer of top coat, seal the free edge, and cure according to the product instructions for a smooth, glossy finish.

Base

Dark Base Anchor

Always apply a layer of solid black or deep gel polish before your cat-eye coat. The reflective magnetic particles need a dark background to create a strong contrast. A deep base makes the metallic shifts pop dramatically instead of looking washed out

No Touch

Hover, Don't Touch

Hold your magnet exactly 3 to 5 millimeters away from the wet, uncured gel surface. Hovering too close risks touching and ruining the wet layer. Staying too far away weakens the magnetic pull, leaving the line blurry instead of sharp.

Freeze

Freeze the Flow

Flash cure each individual finger for 5 to 10 seconds immediately after creating the perfect magnetic line. Cat-eye particles slowly shift and disperse back into the gel while you work on other nails. "Freezing" the design locks the sharp effect instantly in place.

What should I do if the magnet touches the gel?

What It Looks Like

The wet gel surface may have a dent, streak, or disturbed area where the magnet touched it.

Why It Happens

The magnet was positioned too close and made physical contact with the uncured gel.

How to Fix It

Do not cure it yet. Smooth the disturbed gel with your brush if needed, then recreate the magnetic effect before curing.

Prevent It Next Time

Keep the magnet close enough to influence the particles, but always maintain a small gap above the wet gel.

Why does the effect change before curing?

What It Looks Like

The velvet effect looks right at first but becomes softer, shifts, or loses definition while the gel is still uncured.

Why It Happens

The magnetic particles can continue settling and redistributing while the gel remains uncured.

How to Fix It

Reposition the magnet to restore the velvet effect, then cure the nail as soon as you are satisfied with the result.

Work one nail at a time and cure it immediately after creating the desired effect.

Why does the velvet effect look uneven?

What It Looks Like

The glow appears stronger on one side, patchy, or off-center instead of soft and balanced across the nail.

Why It Happens

The magnet may have been held longer or closer on one side, or moved inconsistently around the nail.

How to Fix It

Before curing, reposition the magnet around the nail and make small, controlled movements until the reflection looks balanced. If the effect becomes too concentrated, adjust from the opposite side.

Prevent It Next Time

Move around the nail gradually and watch the reflection continuously instead of holding the magnet in one position for too long.

Do I cure cat eye gel before using the magnet?

No. Apply the cat eye gel and use the magnet while the gel is still uncured. Once you achieve the effect you want, cure the nail to lock the magnetic particles in place.

Why did my cat-eye line disappear or get blurry after curing?

This happens because magnetic particles naturally settle and disperse back into the liquid gel the longer they sit. If you manipulate the magnet on all five fingers before curing, the first few fingers will lose their sharp line.
😍 The Fix: Work one nail at a time and immediately flash-cure it for 5–10 seconds to lock the metallic design into place before moving to the next finger.

Do I need a special base coat for cat-eye gel to work?

You do not need a specialized brand of base coat, but you almost always need a solid dark base color (ideally black or deep navy/plum) under your cat-eye layer. Cat-eye polish contains reflective iron particles that need a dark color beneath them to create visual depth and high contrast.

Can I use regular air-dry nail polish to get a cat-eye effect?

Generally, no. True cat-eye styles require a gel formula. Air-dry lacquer dries too quickly on the surface, locking the metallic pigments in place before the magnet can pull them into a clean design. Gel remains completely fluid until it is placed under a UV/LED lamp, giving you endless time to adjust the magnetic particles.

Why is my magnet not pulling the glitter particles at all?

There are three main reasons your magnet might feel weak or non-responsive:Settled Pigment:
▶︎ The iron oxide shards heavily sink to the bottom of the bottle over time. Shake the bottle vigorously or roll it between your palms before applying.
▶︎ Layer Too Thin: If your application layer is too thin, there isn’t enough depth of liquid for the particles to physically slide past each other.
▶︎ Distance: You may be hovering too far away. The magnet needs to sit roughly 2 to 3 millimetres from the surface to exert proper pull.
