Mastering Gel-X Nail Extensions: From Prep to Perfect Application

Gently push back the cuticles using a sterile pusher and remove non-living tissue from the nail plate. Use a 180-grit buffer to lightly remove the natural shine from the entire nail surface, paying special attention to the side walls and cuticle lines. Wipe the nails thoroughly with a lint-free wipe saturated in pure isopropyl alcohol or acetone to remove all debris, oils, and moisture.

Size your soft gel tips by making sure they fit comfortably from sidewall to sidewall, without forcing or flattening them. If you are between sizes, choose the larger option and gently file down the sides for a custom fit. Apply a layer of gel primer inside the contact area of the tip, or physically etch the inside using an e-file sanding band or hand file until it looks completely matte.

Apply a thin layer of extend gel or base gel over your prepared natural nail and cure it fully for 30 seconds. Next, apply a small bead of extend gel to the inside etched base of the soft gel tip. Hold the tip at a 45-degree angle near the cuticle line, then lower it slowly toward the free edge, watching the gel sweep forward to eliminate all bubbles. Maintain firm pressure and place the nail immediately under a handheld flash-cure lamp for 15 seconds to lock it in place.

Once all fingers are flash-cured, place your entire hand into a full-sized UV/LED lamp to complete a full 60-second cure. After curing, use a hand file or a fine e-file bit to gently blend the rear ledge of the gel tip until it sits flush against the natural nail near the cuticle. Lightly buff the shiny exterior surface of the extension so it is fully prepped to accept gel polish and art layers.

Apply your preferred neutral sheer base color and cure. To create French tips, dip a long-liner brush in high-pigment gel paint to map a central focal point at the tip, then draw symmetrical lines from the sidewalls to form a smooth, curved smile line before filling it in. For intricate linework, keep minimal product on the tip of a fine detail brush, anchor your pinky finger for stability, and pull long, steady strokes across the nail bed without stopping midway. Cure for 30 seconds.

Seal your base art with a streak-free matte or glossy top coat and cure completely. To build 3D textures, use a high-viscosity, non-wipe sculpting gel or hard builder gel on a detail tool. Drizzle raised lines, swirls, or water-drop shapes directly on top of the cured top coat layer. Because these specialty gels don't level out or run, they maintain their height. Give the final dimensional layout a thorough 60-second cure to ensure the thick structures are entirely hardened.
